India has been making superhero films for decades; the industry just took a long time to figure out the visual effects. Shekhar Kapur's Mr. India in 1987 was the original Indian superhero movie — Anil Kapoor as a man with an invisibility bracelet, Amrish Puri as Mogambo delivering what is still the most quoted villain line in Hindi cinema. Rakesh Roshan then built out the modern desi superhero franchise: Koi... Mil Gaya in 2003 was an E.T.-inspired sci-fi family film that introduced the alien Jadoo and awakened young Rohit Mehra's powers; Krrish in 2006 turned Rohit's son into a cape-wearing superhero played by Hrithik Roshan; Krrish 3 in 2013 added a full-blown mutant villain played by Vivek Oberoi. Shah Rukh Khan and Anubhav Sinha's Ra.One in 2011 is the most divisive film on the list — a flawed but ambitious motion-capture superhero movie about a video-game character crossing into the real world, and a crucial stepping stone in Indian VFX. Ayan Mukerji's Brahmāstra Part One: Shiva in 2022 launched the Astraverse, an attempted Indian mythology-superhero cinematic universe with Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Amitabh Bachchan. And Basil Joseph's Malayalam-language Minnal Murali in 2021 — Tovino Thomas as a small-town tailor who gets struck by lightning — is the smartest and most genuinely moving Indian superhero film yet made. Om Raut's Adipurush is included as the mythological-superhero wildcard. Whether you want the nostalgia hit (Mr. India, Koi... Mil Gaya), the franchise run (Krrish trilogy), the prestige play (Minnal Murali) or the modern universe-build (Brahmāstra), this list has all of it. Every film is streamable free in HD on CineFlixo.
