Biography

Scott Columbus (November 10, 1956 – April 5, 2011) was an American drummer best known for his long collaboration with the heavy metal band Manowar.

Columbus began drumming at age six. Growing up, he was influenced by bands such as Led Zeppelin, The Who, Black Sabbath, and Cream, while performing in local groups like Hell Hostage and Oswego’s Barry James Band. Known for his humor, warmth, and passion, he was also a devoted Philadelphia Eagles fan who often dressed as a football player.

At 25, Columbus was discovered by a Manowar fan while working in a foundry, impressing with his powerful, rhythmic hammering on metal. He joined Manowar in time to record their second album, Into Glory Ride (1983), making his debut on the song “Warlord.” He went on to perform on Hail to England (1984), Sign of the Hammer (1984), Fighting the World (1987), and Kings of Metal (1988). After leaving the band in 1990 and being replaced by Rhino, Columbus played locally with Gunshy and worked at a horseradish plant.

He rejoined Manowar for Louder than Hell (1996) and remained through Warriors of the World (2002) and Gods of War (2007). In 2008, he was replaced again by Rhino during the band’s festival performances in Bulgaria and Germany. Columbus later revealed in interviews that he had left after “agreeing to disagree” with bassist Joey DeMaio but expressed no regrets, saying, “I had a long and wonderful career with Manowar; I have no regrets—life moves on.”

Columbus was known for playing the “Drums of Doom,” a custom stainless steel kit built to withstand his powerful style, as standard drums couldn’t handle his force. He also collaborated with Ross the Boss and a local group called PSC, and was reportedly working on an unreleased solo instrumental project.
