Episode synopsis

With Max having made no progress with work on the memoirs, the publishers feel that she is in breach of contract, and demand back the advance money paid to her. Fortunately, Freddie and Max have a late night chat about Max's past, and Freddie combines that and an interview with Anatol Medved, one of Max's early directors, to produce a sample chapter. The publishers are pleased with the results, but Max is less so - she believes that Freddie has abused her trust, and fires her. However, on reading the sample chapter she is happier, and persuades an unhappy Freddie to continue working on the memoirs; she even gives Freddie her letters and diaries to work from.

About Freddie and Max

Maxine Chandler (Anne Bancroft) is a fading Hollywood star who is living in a suite at the Savoy Hotel while she's working in London. She employs a young cockney woman, Freddie Latham (Charlotte Coleman) as her personal assistant. Freddie is an outspoken woman who doesn't hesitate to let Max know about her obvious shortcomings. Max's agent, Malcolm Parkes (Richard Pearson) often echoes Freddie's opinions, though usually much more quietly.
