One morning, a woman's body is found on the beach. The police immediately suspect her daughter, Alina, a drug addict and prostitute. Her partner Reigo is arrested along with Alina. Both remain adamant that they have not killed anyone. When journalist Pille writes a story about Alina as a matricide before the court hearing, it catches the eye of former police officer Mart, who once tried to help teenage Alina. Mart contacts Pille and promises her to find evidence that confirms Alina's innocence.

Mart and journalist Pille visit Alina's former pimp, who tells them about Alina and Reigo's relationship with Alina's mother, Renata. Pille is left believing that only half the truth is being told in court. An article written by the woman disturbs the prosecutor, who claims that Alina now has a second lawyer in the media. As Pille continues her investigation, Alina and Mart's past relationships begin to emerge.
3. The price of freedom

Pille confronts Mart because she believes he is being dishonest with her. Mart asks her to learn more about Alina's criminal past, believing the evidence to be fabricated. Mart takes Pille to a rehabilitation center so that the counselor there can talk to Alina about her aspirations. Despite Mart's story, Pille feels that there was something between Alina and Mart that the man is fiercely hiding.
4. The end justifies the means

Journalist Pille visits Alina's former class teacher, who remembers how Mart influenced her. However, Mart is once again able to talk about his and Alina's past in a way that leaves no room for suspicion. Pille is still haunted by the reason why Mart was once kicked out of the police force.
5. Angel or demon

Pille wants to find evidence to support Mart's claims that Alina's mother, Renata, has abused her daughter. When Renata visits her neighbor, it seems that she was a good mother in every way. The prosecutor also presents evidence that Renata could not have controlled the events on the fateful night, but Alina did. Pille learns that Mart was fired from the police at the same time that Alina's pimp at the time went missing.
6. Silent Witness

The court has to announce its verdict, and Pille's last article, which covers Alina's story, must be published just before the verdict. Mart takes Pille to the woman who once lived in the apartment next to Alina and Renata. The former neighbor tells the opposite story compared to the current neighbor. Mart realizes that Pille's article could be Alina's last straw. Pille realizes for the first time how much her work can affect the fate of others.
